How to clean a microwave- Quick and easy tips you can try right now!

Microwaves are an essential appliance in every kitchen. It makes heating leftover food easy, makes delicious and quick meals too. Over time, food spills, splatters, and lingering odours can make your microwave look and smell unappealing. Microwaves are easy to use, fast, and super convenient—but they also get super dirty. If cleaning your microwave is the last thing on your mind, you aren’t alone. Many of us use our microwaves every day and don’t really notice how dirty they’re getting until it’s too much to ignore. Just like any other kitchen appliance, the longer you put it off, the harder it will be to clean.

Follow this step by step guide:

To clean your microwave effectively, you’ll need the following items:

  • A microwave-safe bowl
  • White vinegar or lemon juice
  • Water
  • A sponge or cloth for wiping, preferably microfiber.
  • A soft brush for scrubbing
  • Baking soda

1. Prepare a cleaning solution:

Fill the microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup of water and add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar or lemon juice. This mixture will help break down and loosen any food particles, making them easier to remove. If you prefer, you can also use a few slices of lemon instead of lemon juice.

2. Heat the cleaning solution:

Place the bowl containing the cleaning solution in the microwave and heat it on high power for 5 minutes. This will create steam, which helps soften and loosen the grime inside the microwave. Be careful when removing the bowl, as it will be hot.

3. Let the microwave cool down:

After heating the cleaning solution, leave the microwave door closed for 2-3 minutes to allow the steam to work on the dirt and grime. This will also help the microwave cool down, reducing the risk of burns.

4. Wipe the interior:

Open the microwave door and carefully remove the bowl with the cleaning solution. Using a sponge or cloth, wipe the interior surfaces of the microwave, starting from the top and working your way down. Pay special attention to areas with stubborn stains or dried-on food particles.

5. Scrub stubborn spots:

For particularly stubborn spots, use a soft brush or a cloth dipped in a paste made from water and baking soda. Gently scrub the area until the stain is removed, then wipe clean with a damp cloth.

6. Clean the microwave turntable:

Remove the microwave turntable and wash it separately in warm, soapy water. Rinse it thoroughly and dry it with a clean cloth before placing it back in the microwave.

7. Wipe the exterior:

Use a damp cloth to wipe down the microwave’s exterior, removing any dirt, dust, or fingerprints. For a greasy exterior use a 50/50 mixture of water and vinegar. Rinse and wipe down.

8. Keep it smelling fresh:

To maintain a fresh-smelling microwave, you can periodically heat a bowl of water mixed with a few tablespoons of white vinegar or lemon juice, as described in steps 2 and 3. This will help neutralize lingering odours and keep your microwave smelling clean.

By following this guide you can keep your microwave clean and smelling fresh, ensuring that it remains a functional and hygienic part of your kitchen. Regular cleaning not only extends the lifespan of your microwave but also improves its efficiency and the taste of the food you prepare in it.
